Photography Schools

By Andrew Kelly

Photography Schools aim to develop your technical skills while also teaching to enhance the abilities of your artistic eye. Being able to take a nice snap shot of the kids with your digital camera does not mean that you would be capable of producing the same results as a professional photographer. However, with a little photographic training or photography classes you may find that you become inspired to enroll into a photography school. It is possible to achieve high standards of education with photography colleges offering photography degrees (Associate of Arts (AA), Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees in Photography). Some also provide graduate level studies for certificates in photography with specialized techniques. Associate and bachelor degrees allow for entry-level positions as technicians, assistants, artists, and commercial photography.

Your course will include instruction on the use of cameras and other photography equipment and technical aspects of photography such as length of exposures, digital photography, depth of field, types of lenses etc. Learning how to take photos is only part of the program as you will be expected to have a full hands on experience from taking the photo right through to the development and printing of the film. The general curriculum starts with camera basics, digital and film techniques and progresses onto composition, lighting, portraiture, with an introduction to fine arts. The photography program includes all aspects of color photography and black and white photographs, darkroom techniques for printing and digital-imaging software.

After obtaining your qualification from the photography school there will be a wide and varied career path available to you. Most courses include an introduction to these but many now provide courses that include the relevant training for careers such as photojournalism, graphic design & illustration, commercial advertising, documentary and presentation skills. Also, for budding professional photographers, you will be shown all you need to know about setting up a studio and the business skills that you will require.

Photography is an art and as such the primary aims of a photography school are to teach you about how to take a photograph but also to develop and encourage creativity, personal expression, and development of individual style through photography training programs. The skills gained will help your development as an artist.

For those who have an interest in photography having purchased a digital camera simple digital photography courses may be more suitable. You may find that, as part of your current job, or chosen career, a knowledge of photography would be advantageous. Areas such as news, sports, portraiture, marketing, web design etc. all require photography to some degree but not really sufficient to merit attendance at a photography school.
